Poetry Workshop with Caleb Rainey

Join us for a playful poetry workshop! The Iowa Children’s Museum, in partnership with Think Iowa City, is proud to welcome local author, performer, and producer Caleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey for a special drop-off program on Friday, April 22 from 6 – 7:30 p.m!
What: Enjoy free play in the museum followed by a writing workshop with Caleb, in celebration of National Poetry Month. In this workshop, we will use our favorite, coolest, wackiest objects from around the museum to create persona poems. With the help of similes and metaphors, we will make our objects come alive! The workshop is limited to 20 participants. Learn more about our guest artist here.
Who: Children ages 8 and up

About Caleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey
Caleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey is an author, performer, and producer. His debut book, Look, Black Boy, was awarded first prize in the North Street Book Prize, and his second book, Heart Notes was published in 2019. In 2020 and 2021 he was named Best Poet/Spoken Word Performer in Cedar Rapids & Iowa City. He is the winner of several slams across the United States, a 2019 finalist for the UNESCO City of Literature Global Poetry Slam – Iowa City, and was featured on Button Poetry and Write About Now.
When he is not writing and performing he is actively curating a community of spoken word poets in Iowa City through his creation of a high school program, IC Speaks, and producing local events like the Mic Check Poetry Festival.
